What they do

The genome is composed of 3 billion “letters”, or base pairs, of DNA. The exome is a portion of the genome that encodes proteins, which are involved in many different types of cellular functions. Changes in DNA can change the way proteins are formed or utilized by the cell, potentially causing disease. When patients present with complex issues, a genetic diagnosis may be available, but a traditional genetic panel test may be too narrow to identify the cause.
