Até 26 de setembro de 2006, o Grupo REN tinha a sua atividade centrada no negócio da eletricidade, através da REN – Rede Eléctrica Nacional, S.A. Em 26 de setembro de 2006, decorrente da transação de “unbundling” do negócio do gás natural, o Grupo sofreu uma alteração significativa com a compra dos ativos e participações financeiras associados às atividades de transporte, armazenamento e regaseificação de gás natural, constituindo um novo negócio. No início de 2007, a Empresa foi transformada na “holding” do Grupo e redenominada, após a transferência do negócio da eletricidade para uma nova empresa constituída em 26 de setembro de 2006, a REN – Serviços de Rede, S.A., que foi em simultâneo redenominada para REN – Rede Eléctrica Nacional, S.A. O Grupo detém, presentemente, duas áreas de negócio principais, a Eletricidade e o Gás, e uma área de negócio secundária, na área de Telecomunicaçõ
